Omesta vs Recharge: subscription billing vs recovery, compared
Recharge is the dominant subscription-billing platform for Shopify and serves tens of thousands of stores. Omesta is not a billing platform — we sit on top of whatever billing you have (Stripe, Recharge, ReCharge-on-Stripe, etc.) and recover what slips through. So this comparison is really about whether you need both, and what each is good at.
Quick verdict
- Pick Recharge if you need a subscription-billing product to manage recurring orders, customer portals, swap-and-skip flows, and Shopify-native checkout. You will still need a recovery layer.
- Pick Omesta on top of Recharge if you're already using Recharge for billing and want a recovery layer that catches what Recharge's built-in dunning misses — typically a 30-50% lift on top of their default recovery.
What each product does
Recharge runs the subscription billing: order generation, customer portal, swap/skip flows, build-a-box, etc. They have basic dunning built in.
Omesta runs the recovery layer: smarter retry timing, decline-code routing, cardholder-aware dunning, and ad-spend leak detection — none of which is in Recharge's scope.
Why most growth-stage Recharge stores also run Omesta
- Recharge's built-in dunning is fixed-schedule, not decline-code aware. Stores that add Omesta on top typically see 30-50% more failed payments recovered.
- Recharge handles subscription billing well but doesn't touch the ad-spend side. Omesta's leak detection extends across Meta, Google, TikTok.
- Recharge's recovery dashboard tops out at "we sent the email." Omesta reports actual revenue recovered, attributed to the specific intervention that caused it.
Pricing
Recharge is a percentage of subscription revenue (around 1% transaction-style). Omesta is flat ($249/$599/$1,299 per month) and free until cumulative recovery crosses $1,000.
Setup
If you're already on Recharge, Omesta connects to your underlying Stripe in two minutes via read-only OAuth. No code changes, no Recharge config.
